Scrapbuster No. 7: Patchwork Crocheted Afghan

Copper insisted on being photographed with the afghan.
One thing I have a lot of is yarn scraps.  If it’s longer than a yard long, I keep it.  Why?  The answer is this afghan:
This is a great project for a chilly night.
This afghan is a work in progress and will be for the rest of my life (and maybe someone else’s).  Every once in awhile, I’ll pick this up and add on a few more granny squares.  It’s a fun piece because I can look at it and think about all mittens, hats, scarfs and sweaters I’ve made over the years.
Lots of fond knitting memories in this afghan.
The afghan is made entirely of worsted and DK weight wool yarns and a Size G hook. Since the different weights are spread throughout the piece, it’s not had the effect of making the shape wonky.  I just started on of these in sock weight yarn:
This measures about 5 x 5 inches.
Here is my granny square pattern:

Round 1:  Ch4, connect with a slip stitch to form a ring
Round 2:  Ch3, 2 dc, *ch2, 3 dc* (repeat 3 times), ch2, connect to ch3 piece with slip stitch
Round 3:  Ch3, 2 dc, ch2, 3 dc, *ch2, 3 dc, ch2, 3 dc* (repeat 3 times), ch2, connect to chain 3 piece with slip stich, end.

I connect my pieces as I go along to save the bother of sewing them together.  I crochet two sides of the final round, then, as I’m crocheting the final two sides, I slip stitch the square to the afgan at the corners and centers of the sides.  It’s way easier than sewing them!

Consider this idea for your leftover yarns.
My temperamental model walks off the set.
