Challenge No. 20 Submission - Fabric Covered Holiday Storage Boxes - Tutorial

May I introduce you to my newest storage solution? These are fabric covered boxes, made to hold holiday decorations. The idea is for the contents to be obvious by the box "decor" ... It seem to be forming a habit of making some craft for each holiday and they didn't really have a place, and everything needs a place. So, I decided to give new life to some old shoe / gift boxes by covering them in cute fabrics.

Which holidays do you think these boxes represent?

Pink & red = Valentine's Day, and

Red white & blue = Memorial Day & 4th of July!

They are big enough to hold all those random holiday trinkets (like the stuff from the dollar bin at Target that I cannot help but go to).

You see, part of my laundry room is really organized but part is not. For months, I've been shoving stuff on the shelves. In my recent spring cleaning / organizing mode, I couldn't handle it anymore.  I decided I wanted boxes that made it obvious what was inside.

I think it'd be fun to embellish with ribbon, buttons, etc and use them for gift boxes (like for a new baby, or a wedding present). Here are a couple of other ideas for these boxes (I'll probably do some of these as my spring cleaning fit continues to plague me):

• boxes for Christmas cards (for each year, with the year on the box)
• boxes to hold gifts / box as the gift.
• boxes for each year of child's life (mark it w/ the number) ... to hold cards, pics, etc.

Challenge No. 20 Submission - Display Box Table

Tell me, how are you supposed to think outside the box when your challenge is to think about boxes?

It took awhile, but I finally came up with this idea for a table.

I have to admit, this one had me stumped for a long time. I couldn’t move my mind away from the thought of making a box. I literally could not think outside the box. Creative stagnation is only made worse when coupled with cliché, believe me.


Then I remembered a display box I bought at Goodwill a few months ago. At the time, I didn’t know why I was buying it as I had no earthly use for it. However, I knew I wanted it and its use would someday be revealed to me. That day had come. It would become a table!

A couple years ago, I had bought some wooden legs at Goodwill. Again, I had no earthly use for them, but I knew I wanted them and their use would someday be revealed to me. That day had come. It was all meant to happen. The Goodwill gods were guiding me.

I started by attaching the legs to the display box. Power tools. Fun. I started out using all four screws in the plate that the leg screws into, but quickly figured out that would be problematic for the display area. That problem was easily solved by taking out the one screw that wasn’t along the edge.

Oops!  That fourth screw is going to have to go so it doesn't "screw" up my display area.

Next came sanding and painting. Taping off the glass area was a bit of a pain, but other than that, this took no time. Since the other wood (or wood-like veneer) in the room where the table will be used is dark, I decided to go with dark brown spray paint. It looks good and definitely has a 1960s vibe, like so much of my home.

I decided to display some of my vintage sewing items. I’ve never had a good place to put them out before.

I laid my display objects on a piece of velvet to give the vignette more depth and texture.

Knock Off Cheerleader Outfit - DIY / Mini Tute

I wonder if this happens to everyone who has kids? Did you get a TON of clothes with your college / favorite team logo on them? We did! And most of them were SUPER cute!!! I received an "exception" piece .... and it's this onesie right here:

Doesn't look so bad, right? I agree ... here's the deal. It says 12-18 months but it is HUGE!! It only started fitting my oldest daughter when she was 3 years old. And by then, she was potty trained (hallelujah!) so I wasn't exactly down with a onesie and it just looked ridiculous on her (yes even w/ pants or a skirt).

I know these little diddies are expensive, so I started thinking - how can I refashion this?
