Fabric Nesting Dolls - Challenge No. 19 Submission

I had about three competing ideas in my head for this challenge, a lot of procrastination and one extension (did you notice we pushed this a week?).  My oldest daughter is a really into "family" right now - in fact, her lovey aka "Towel" has a family now: her stuffed monkey is Towel's brother, her blanket is Towel's mommy, and her sleeping bag is Towel's daddy. Don't ask me, she has a vivid imagination that I'm happy to foster and roll with. So for this Toy Challenge, I wanted to keep with the family theme.

While craft blog reading one day, I came across this fun blog called Made by Joel - Joel creates toys for his kids. I was looking around and then saw these: Fabric Nesting Dolls. A-ha, the perfect craft for the Toy Challenge!

Challenge No. 17 (Easter) Submission - Bunny Finger Puppets

The Challenge ... Easter. The Submission ... Bunny Finger Puppets!

Are they not the cutest? Love them! The fact that there are pom poms on them is just an added bonus. I have a serious thing for pom poms, check the evidence.

The bunnies are made with REAL FELT and some bamboo. Let me tell you - this stuff is a DREAM to sew. Dream. It feels good, it is so pretty, the colors are awesome, it's all natural and it does not get all wonky and wacky the way the $.29 / sheet stuff does.

Scrapbuster No. 20: Scappy Owls

I had the best of intentions for making these little scrapbusting owls for gifts, but it seems other little hands have staked their claim on them! One pair of hands insists on taking her "baby toy" with her; she has also started asking for a paci and saying "wah wah look I a baby." Charming, huh!? (She is 3.5).

This is a great scrapbusting project - the owls are actually pretty small. I used felt scraps for the eyes & beak. The owls are stuffed with scrap batting and plastic that would otherwise have gone into the trash.

I used the Rubber Punkin's tutorial with pattern pieces found here. Easy to follow and awesome to print out the pieces as a pdf. Jill of Handmade by Jill posted about how she made these scrappy owls but inserted plastic inside her owls (so they crinkle lots) ... and I did that too; even I kind of want to play with them!

These two owls are spoken for - it's back to the sewing table for some giftable owls!

Scrapbuster No. 13: Doll Furniture

Doll furniture made from matchboxes, fabric scraps, a cereal box, some bamboo skewers and pony beads.
Seems like kids have a lot of toys these days.  Why, in my day, we had no stinking toys!  We played with dirt and an old stick, and we were happy to have that!  If we didn’t make our own, we had nothing!

Well, that’s not exactly true as I do recall having lots of toys, but I do remember that I liked to make my own toys, too.  It’s a great way to get kids crafting and sewing.

The bed is made out of a spray painted cereal box, bamboo skewers, and some beads.  The mattress is a simple pillow filled with fiberfil.

The nightstands are matchboxes covered with fabric scraps with beads for knobs and legs.

On that next snowy or rainy day, take an hour to sit with your kids and see what you can make out of some scraps, cardboard and beads.
